arnold schwarzenegger visits d.c. and talks openly about his love child scandal and rebuilding his image. >> but we begin tonight with a fox 5 weather alert taking live look outside in oxon hill. can you see how heavy the fog is out there? the rain is mostly gone, but that thick blanket of fog could be hanging around for tomorrow morning's commute. let's go right to sue palka in the weather center for the very latest. >> if it's not one thing, it's the other. heavy rain this morning made driving tough and it's contributing to the big fog layer we have. we do not have a dense fog advisory issued, but the national weather service is keeping an eye on conditions. that might consider and if it's around in the morning, it could slow you down. let me show you current visibilities, not much in the way of rain showing up now. the fog is the big story tonight and the temperatures that are really seeing a wide range at this hour. we're down to about a 1/2-mile

at gaithersburg and about .3- mile at dulles. we had seen visibility getting much better in d.c. but recently seeing it drop again. that's because we have a boundary of warmer air trying to come through. not everybody is getting the fog. if the warm front has come through your region, your visibility is pretty good like at quantico and fredericksburg, but this will vary. wherever that boundary is bumping into the cooler air it is creating some fog. here's what i'm talking about. what a temperature contrast. it's 63 at dulles, but it's 71 in d.c. just down to our south and east right around maybe a little close to the leonardtown area is where the warm frontal boundary is trying to push more north and west but is struggling. that's why you see the low 60s to the north of it. that's where there's more fog and drizzle. south of it we've got low 70s and even upper 70s like salisbury at 77 and raleigh at 87. they were up to 87 today, down

to 77 degrees now, so obviously a lot of fog out there, a couple hours. this is about the only measurable rain coming up from madison county moving north. so there will possibly be a shower overnight, but fog will be the bigger story. it may impact your morning commute. another news alert out of montgomery county. an alleged member of a violent gang convicted today on assault and robbery charges. this is video of that beating. prosecutors say the victim damien wilson agreed to fight with one of the other people in this video, but all those guys showed up and beat him. dashon powell was one of them convicted today based on information from other suspects. six other pled guilty. police believe powell is a member of the crips gang. d.c. police want you to take a good look at this man accused of robbing a cleaners on florida avenue northwest last wednesday morning. he pulled a gun from his waistband and stole money from

the register and casually walked out. no one was hurt. police are offering a $10,000 reward for leads that lead to an arrest. new information on a story you saw first on fox 5, one of eight camp counselors fired over the summer for allegedly organizing a fight club at camp brown now facing charges. gene baptiste is charged with second degree assault. two other managers may be charged. the campus closed the rest of the summer. the former governor of california is talking a lot about things he's never mentioned before, not even to his wife maria shriver and his confessions are raising eyebrows all over again. fox 5's will thomas is in the newsroom with this one. >> by now i think we've all heard about this new book. his infomercial plays all the time, but maybe you haven't heard this. arnold schwarzenegger had open heart surgery without telling

maria shriver beforehand, his wife. he didn't tell shriver he was running for governor until a w days before announcing it. maybe you have heard this. he admits he fathered a child with their housekeeper. the terminator turned governor is touring the country promoting his book total recall released this week. on this night a stop at d.c.'s hamilton hotel, an event hosted by the washington post. arnold schwarzenegger says he's embarrassed about his affair with the family housekeeper. when asked if he regrets allowing the housekeeper and the son he fathered with her to live under the same roof with his wife maria shriver and she didn't know about it, this is how he responded. >> look, we all look smarter in hindsight, that's for sure, but the bottom line is that's what i did. that's the way i handled it. the way i dealt with the whole thing is as good as i could deal with it. if it's wrong or right, it's

republican primary debates. the obama campaign announced today the president will be back in our area on friday at a campaign rally in fairfax, virginia. tom fitzgerald, fox 5 news. ws. >> let's bring in fox 5 political analyst mark plotkin now to talk a little more. most polls show that mitt romney is within striking distance now, but the pressure obviously on him. what does he need to do in this debate? >> he's locked up the republican vote. republicans are for him, maybe not happily. they don't think maybe he's philosophically ideal logically as pure as he would like, but it seems to me he has to appeal to voters doesn't have. those are independents, people not aligned with the democrat or republican party and suburban women. that would be constituencies maybe who are undecided or wavering on obama that he needs to get. >> what does he need to avoid doing? >> how about not looking at his

watch. remember george bush, i. how about not interrupting. you remember al gore? how about not sighing and also just absolutely trying to show some vulnerability. the american public polls said 41% know him. 70% obviously know president obama. he's kind of seen more open, more accessible and to try to get rid of that image of being just a wealthy businessman. >> what does president obama need to do? can he just stay the course and win this thing? >> some say all he has to do is not drool on tv. act presidential. don't be aloof. don't be smug. don't be arrogant. just be yourself. people know you. don't give any reason for people to dislike you because people already do like you and to tell them why the next four years will be better for people

who are in dire economic straits than the last four years. >> speaking of which, vice president joe biden certainly not making that task easier the day before remarking that the middle class is getting buried. hello? they've been in charge four years. >> we've talked about this before and i predicted and accurately that joe biden would misspeak, not be elegant in phrasing something and he is true to form. people don't vote for vice presidents. they vote for president. bind is on the ticket. -- biden is on the ticket. he'll have a chance to redeem himself in the one presidential debate with paul ryan. >> what do you think of this report that a lot of people think the polls of these two candidates are skewed towards obama, so it looks like all these polls show obama is in the lead and there's a report now saying a lot of those polls are underreporting and oversampling democrats. >> the allegation is there's oversampling of democrats. every poll is different, but

to prevent voter fraud. the judge ruled there was not enough time to enact the law to make sure voters were not disenfranchised. politics and major league sport seem to be chiding on the gridiron, so the baltimore orioles have joined the same sex marriage debate. brendan ayanbadejo voiced his support. he defended his teammate's right to stand against gay marriage saying he's an educated intelligent man who is great father and has a right to his opinion. meanwhile the redskins have come out in favor of another key maryland issue, gambling expansion. the team announced today 10 doriss question 7 which would create a cass -- today it endorses question 7 which would create a casino at national harbor. governor o'malley said 48.5% of the revenue would go towards

the d.c. sniper attacks began. if you lived in the d.c. region during those three weeks in october of 2002, you know firsthand the terror and fear sparked by john allen muhammad and lee boyd malvo. they killed 10 people and seriously hurt three others. tonight one of the survivors talks about the tragedy. >> there was a victim shot at point blank range five times by lee boyd malvo and lived to tell about it, paula rus -- paul la rusa. he says he values life more and is no longer haunted by nightmares. >> they say he stayed pretty straight on and just boom boom boom. >> this is the chrysler 300 paul larussa was sitting in when he was shot by lee boyd

malvo. >> the gun only held five, so he emptied it out, which is good because if he, you know, if he knew i was alive. >> larussa sold his italian restaurant in clinton and now lives peacefully in st. mary's county. >> i have moved on. it doesn't haunt me. >> not like at first when he had nightmares. that fateful september 5th malvo, 17 at the time, approached his car, raised a handgun to the driver's side window and fired five .22 caliber rounds. witnesses saw him. >> he ran up to the car window. they saw him shoot and open the backdoor, grab my computer and briefcase and run down the street. >> reporter: did they see him get in a car? >> no. there was no car. >> reporter: for the longest time you just thought? >> random act of violence of some sort. >> he was shot in the chest, stomach and back. malvo ran off with the laptop

in larussa's car and a briefcase containing several thousand dollars. >> that's where it started with me and that computer was mine. so then i dealt with the fact that i was part of this insanity. >> oddly larussa didn't find out he was a sniper victim until police arrested malvo and john muhammad and recovered his laptop from the jerry rigged car they did the shootings from. larussa never made the connection until later. >> reporter: then the sniper attacks started and everybody was afraid. >> including me because i didn't know. so i was in the same place everybody else was. >> larussa has read and listened to the washington post interview in which malvo professes his regret about the shootings. >> reporter: does he seem genuinely remorseful to you? >> actually he does. i think he's a vastly different person than he was 10 years ago.

i do give some credence to the fact that he was controlled by this man. however, that being said, not controlled where he was a robot. he knew and he admits that he knew what he was doing. he knew shooting people wasn't good, killing people wasn't a good thing. so he was completely responsible for what he did and his punishment is just. >> paul larussa said he's pretty much recovered from his physical injuries. his left arm is still a little stiff. he thinks about getting involved with victims assistance programs but is generally happy, says eyes thankful always to see another -- he's thankful always to see another day and says he's thought about asking for an interview with his shooter. he's curious to talk to lee malvo. >> great to hear from him and see he's doing well. we asked our facebook friends what they remember about the attacks. andrew wrote going to the gas station was dreadful seriously,

on three separate flights. two made emergency landings. the airlines say improperly installed clamps caused those seats to come loose. fox's david lee miller has the latest from new york. >> reporter: american now confirms three incide just the last week during which rows of seats came loose from the floor. >> american airlines operates the old he is fleets in america. the oldest fleets in america. as your car gets older, it requires more maintenance. as our aircraft get older, it requires more maintenance. >> reporter: less than a year after filing for bankruptcy, american airlines is stuck in contract negotiations with the union representing its pilots working without a contract for six years. picketing pilots say they are extra vigilant because they are concerned about outsourced maintenance and overworked inspectors. >> american airlines issued several thousand furloughs. they closed an entire maintenance base in tulsa, oklahoma. so now you have a very

demoralized maintenance crew. >> reporter: american airlines officials say the problem with the seats is a mechanical issue and isn't related to its labor problems saying, "we're working very diligently to gather all the facts related to our 757 seats issue." so how does american airlines rebound from all the negative publicity? >> this is a good way not only to lose your reputation, but to lose your company. so they've got to nip this in the bud, unhinged seats and emergency landings and delayed flights, not exactly the ideal marketing position for an airline. >> reporter: in addition to its financial and maintenance issues, the peril earned more bad press last week after -- the airline earned more bad press last week after two flight attendants got into a fight causing a four-hour delay. spirit airlines is known for its low fares, but its carry-on fees are flying much higher. starting november 6th passengers will have to pay a

$100 carry-on fee at the boarding gate. that's more than double what flyers paid before. you can avoid the higher price by paying a smaller fee before heading to the errant. all those extra fees account -- airport. all those extra fees account for 40% of the airlines' revenue. fox 5 obtained a board of trustees report submitted to d.c. council. it hasn't been released to the public, but it outlines a plan to get udc back on its feet including asking the district for $41 million. the school has been criticized for having too many students and not enough faculty. you can see the full report on www.myfoxdc.com. the d.c. council made a bold move today hoping to grab the attention of lawmakers on capitol hill. leaders want full budget control and are pushing a new plan. fox 5's matt ackland has the

details. >> reporter: it's not often you see the mayor of one of the most powerful cities in the country sit down in the middle of the street handcuffed and then taken to jail. budget autonomy was one of the reasons why mayor gray and several council members took such a bold move. there has been progress on the hill but still no autonomy bill has been passed. >> i think every member here knows the importance of the district government securing local control of our budget. >> reporter: chairman of the d.c. council phil mendelson introduced a bill tuesday with all council members on board that would basically allow voters to approve a change in the district's charter that would block federal budget control. >> we believe that's what they will do and the congress of the united states has final say. they can vote the referendum change the amendment up or down. we hope they will just decide to take it back. >> reporter: the plan would not only give d.c. leaders full control of the budget but also

galloping towards flagler beach telling police he was heading to his grandmother's house. police started following him on u.s. 1 right in front of a hotdog stand. the owner watched in awe. >> that was probably one of the funniest things i've ever seen in my life. >> reporter: people came out of their homes, businesses, even pulled over to check out what was going on. >> i was coming down u.s. 1 to here and i see a horse come out of a road and riding on u.s. 1. there had to be 20 cop cars. >> reporter: police say they repeatedly told the man to get off the horse and out of the street. they followed him over railroad tracks and through busy intersections. >> we saw the whole thing from start to finish. i couldn't believe all the cops were saying down! down! i went oh, my god. >> reporter: police followed him for 35 minutes through town when they finally convinced him to get off the horse. with a little help from police

cohort was cuffed and taken to jail. the horse we're told had some minor injuries to one of its legs but is fine thanks to a motorist who stopped to guide the horse out of the road. >> a truck stopped and grabbed the horse so it wouldn't get hurt and she's going up u.s. 1 with the horse. you know, she's driving and holding the horse. i turned around because i said i got to see the rest of this stuff. >> that was kelly joyce reporting. the man is facing resisting arrest and animal cruelty charges. >> sounds like san francisco out there. >> doesn't it, though, a little fog going on. we had a lot of heavy rain today and a front trying to push through having a hard time. where it's setting up shop, you can see the boundary here. we've got a lot of fog and a little drizzle as well. we don't have a dense fog advisory issued yet, but if it continues like this, some spots may have very reduced visibility in the morning.

you may want to plan extra time. be sure to check out tucker barnes in the morning. that's how it's looking now. here at fox 5 we'll show you where we're seeing those visibilities at this hour. not everybody is fogged in, but from the district on north there is a section of the metro area that's a little worse. quantico has good visibility, leonard town as well and manassas not bad. you get sort of between dulles to gaithersburg, d.c. to prince george's county and down even through nats park where if you were watching the game, you saw the fog out there. it will be a concern in some areas. be aware of that if your commute is typically one that takes you through a lot of foggy areas and also if you had a lot of rain today, you're really primed for that. meanwhile it's 72 degrees right now. our warm front is right about here. it should have been north of us by now and it seems to be taking a long time. so we're concerned maybe temperatures tomorrow could have a real wide range just as we saw today with 60s to the

north and 80s to the south. meanwhile we had a wide range of rain totals, too. reagan national had under 1/2- inch, bwi a little over but then dulles a record rainfall amount today of over 2 inches. this is where the heaviest rain was here in the greens and yellows here along and west of interstate 95. down to the south and east we didn't see as much. this was really torrential early this morning, caused a lot of problems, definitely heavy in montgomery county including the gaithersburg area and rockville. there were a of roads closed. culpeper county had a lot of flooding not too far from leesburg 2.2 inches reported and on up into howard county and frederick some very heavy rain, but again only in that band. other places only got a few tenths of an inch as we saw down in charles county. tonight not much left. we have a little drizzle and fog. this little batch trying to get in a bit closer is moving north. we'll keep a chance for a

shower in overnight because this frontal boundary is trying to move through. the heaviest of it was early this morning. again lighter showers still may be around tonight and i think there might be a slight chance of a shower tomorrow afternoon as the frontal boundary comes in and maybe a thunderstorm but not a huge chance. our dilemma tomorrow is a couple things. first of all, the temperature. we're going for 85 degrees. if this warm front doesn't go through, it could be 10 degrees cooler than that. if it lurks in the area, we may have a better focus for showers and storms tomorrow, but right now we'll stick with the 80s. expect a warm day. if the sun tries to pop through, you'll know that frontal boundary made it into town. thursday about 82 degrees, could be a spotty shower on thursday as well as a frontal boundary, a cool front, tries to swing through, but these are definitely very warm for september and what we'll be having is a bit of a battle. the warm air again trying to push through from high pressure off the coast. it is slow to move off. mean while get ready for a big

change as we head into the weekend because we're noticing some very cool air, coldest air of the season. that tries to plow through with a cold front saturday night, brings us another chance for showers and storms. as we head into the second half of the weekend and into monday and tuesday, you might be describing it as kind of chilly out there. that's why we say we have summer on this seven-day forecast and also some cooler temperatures. tomorrow about 85, thursday 82, friday 82 and saturday we drop to 74 with 60s coming on your fox 5 accuweather seven-day forecast. we think the weekend now will end up with a couple showers late saturday, maybe a storm at 74. then the colder air blasts into town. we're 66 sunday. on columbus day monday only 62, but the big deal will be only in the 40s in the morning. a lot of people have columbus day off. going from summer to fall in about three days. heads up for people in
